THANK YOU to all the Boaters, Neighbors, and Elected Officials who came out to "CRUISE THE COVE!"  The turnout on land and on sea exceeded all expectations.  So did the press coverage!

Map of Morris Cove, part of New Haven Harbor.  The Army Corps proposes to fill the entire Borrow Pit with toxic dredge spoils from Bridgeport.  The Borrow Pit is the underwater hole indicated in white on the map in the middle of Morris Cove.  You can see how large it is!

WHEN: Sunday, July 10, 2:30 to 3:15 p.m.
BOATERS assemble 2:00 p.m. Procession starts at 2:30 p.m.
NON-BOATERS join at the Pardee Seawall Park at 2:30 p.m
. (Townsend Ave. at Parker Pl. -- see map.)  Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro and Alderwoman Arlene DiPino will join our rally.

WHERE:
BOATERS gather in Morris Cove at the north end of the proposed dump site which is a few hundred yards off the Sea Wall and will be marked by 4 round orange buoys.  Pick up an instruction sheet for the procession from Larry in the New Haven Yacht Club launch.  He will be stationed on the outer (west) side of the dump site.

KAYAKERS gather closer in to the Sea Wall where Brian, the Kayak coordinator, will provide instructions.  The closest kayak launching site (where parking is available) is the beach area next to the large boccie court in Nathan Hale Park off Woodward Ave.  (See map.)  From there paddle South past the Cliff to the protest site.

WHY: Show the politicians and the ACE that the Cove and outer harbor are recreational waters, not a dump for carcinogens. Let them see our community's determination to protect New Haven Harbor's recovering environmental health.

AFTERWARDS: You are invited to stop by at the New Haven Yacht Club (156 Cove St. - see map) for some refreshment and a chance to interact with fellow demonstrators (see note below**). Please feel free to donate finger food and snacks.

Parking in Cove St. is very limited. Best: Take a short walk.

In the spirit of the 4th,

stand up for what’s right!

**The NHYC dock is a short way to the west of Anthony’s Catering. Except for kayaks, canoes and dinghies that can be tied to the west side of the dock or pulled up on shore, visiting boaters are asked to anchor at the edge of the mooring field and radio on 68 for the club launch to bring you in, or sound an air horn three times.  Please don’t tie up at vacant moorings because they belong to members who are out sailing and might return while you are ashore.

NHPOWer advocates out in force at Governor Malloy's Town Hall

We came to remind Gov. Malloy we appreciate his support of clean water in New Haven and his pledge that the Bridgeport dredging material will not be dumped on New Haven.

“Quite frankly, I think Morris Cove probably should be reserved for the dredging that is going to have to take place in New Haven,” Malloy said to applause from the crowd.
Follow up with an email to thank him!

of Town Tall meeting

(Toxic sludge question at 28 minutes-click headline to view)

"Despite the disagreements over his budget plan, the crowd was polite and there were several humorous moments, including when a young boy, dressed as a blue crab, stood on his tiptoes to reach the mic.

“Can you help not pour all the poison on me?” asked Icolas Rivetta, 7, representing marine life in New Haven Harbor.

The young Morris Cove resident was part of a small contingent that reminded Malloy of his promise last year to not allow toxic, dredged materials from Bridgeport Harbor to be dumped in the harbor off Morris Cove."

CT DEP Commissioner Daniel C. Esty

Connecticut DEP Commissioner Daniel C. Esty said, "As Commissioner I want to highlight the tremendous natural resources our state enjoys and also make certain that I am available to meet and hear from the public. The ‘Commissioner in your Corner’ initiative is a way to accomplish both these goals – to visit and tour a tremendous outdoor location in our state each month and while there, to talk with Connecticut residents about environmental issues."
